Formal afternoon tea was introduced into the food world in Britain in 1840, but the practice of enjoying tea dates back to China and the emperors of as far back as 2737 BC. That’s a long, long history of delicious tea times to take into account! However, Chicago is holding up that long-standing tradition of tea time with plenty of unique and decadent afternoon teas throughout the city. Take some time, and relax this weekend over a warm cup of tea…
The Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel {221 North Columbus Drive, Chicago; 312.565.5258}
For out of towners, having afternoon tea in one of Chicago’s most fun and conveniently-located hotels is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Elegantly served next to the hotel’s cozy 50 foot fireplace, Radisson Blu Aqua’s modern tea puts a twist on the tradition. They have tea cocktails for those looking for extra fun, but their tea menu, complete with sweet and savory options, is delicious all on its own.
The Commons Club at The Virgin Chicago {203 North Wabash Avenue, Chicago; 855.946.6600}
Who says tea and happy hour can’t be one in the same? Commons Club has opted for a more boozy and unconventional way to share a spot of tea at their Upside Down Tea Party on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 – 5 PM. They do have traditional tea favorites from Rare Tea Cellar, but they also have gin infused delights and both sweet and elegant bites. It’s a true tea party!
Vanille {2108 North Clark Street, Chicago; 773.868.4574}
For a French inspired afternoon tea experience, take in the ambiance of the Vanille salon at their Lincoln Park location. There will be signature pastries, scones and finger sandwiches, plus the finest of Benjamin’s Tea every Thursday through Sunday with daily reservations at noon, 2 PM or 4 PM. Get excited for Petit Croissants, Black Forest Ham, Petit Chocolate Cupcakes with Chocolate Ganache and of course Vanille Signature Petit Amber Bars.

The Allis {113-125 North Green, Chicago; 312.521.8000}
Soho House immediately gives a feeling of intimacy and class to any gathering. Though not everyone can make it up in the gilded elevators (you need a membership for that), all can enjoy afternoon tea in their lobby restaurant and bar. Given that The Allis is already a popular work-from-home and meeting spot, ending your work day or brainstorming session with high tea (and maybe a glass of bubbly!) is the perfect way to elevate your afternoon.
The Lobby at The Peninsula {108 East Superior Street, Chicago; 312.573.6695}
If you prefer contemporary American fare and beautiful decor, there is no better afternoon tea spot than The Lobby at The Peninsula. Take a table by their 20 foot high floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the Terrace. Their Afternoon Tea features a samplings of seasonal flavors, both sweet and savory, accompanying their selection of teas.

The Langham {330 North Wabash Avenue, Chicago; 312.923.9988}
The most decadent afternoon tea in the city is at The Pavilion at The Langham. The Langham Afternoon Tea with Wedgwood, recalls the grandeur of the original Langham hotel in London, where the tradition was born in 1865. Afternoon Tea with Wedgwood includes specialty Langham teas, and an array of sweet and savory bites. There’s live music, and you can add a glass of bubbly to make this the ultimate spot for a girl’s afternoon out.
