While there are many amazing restaurants in Chicago, there’s something special about a stand-alone, independent restaurant. It really makes you feel like you’re dining with family, and you know you’re getting a meal that’s one-of-a-kind. If you want to support these local spots, and the food families that make them so special, we’re here to make it easy on you! These are just some of the wonderful independent restaurants in our city…
Mable’s Table {1655 West Cortland Street, Chicago; 773.904.7433}: If you’re missing your mother’s cooking, you need to make your way to Mable’s Table. With classic dishes that have Mama Mae’s approval, and a welcoming staff that know every dish on the menu, this is the perfect cozy spot for family dinner or a big brunch party. The Shred Off the O’ Block Mac n’ Cheese and Vanilla Crunch French Toast are must-tries.
BLVD {817 West Lake Street, Chicago; 312.526.3116}: This sexy spot has become a go-to for date nights and celebration dinners in Chicago. Just walking in will make you feel more relaxed and removed from the bustle of the city, so pull up a chair for an amazing evening. While you’re there, definitely give the Herb Crusted Lamb Chops a try!
Batter & Berries {2748 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago; 773.248.7710}: There is always a line at this breakfast, brunch, and lunch spot—and for good reason! Celebrities and locals alike flock there for the French Toast Flights and specialties like the La Colombe Brisket and The PortaBella Hash. You won’t want to miss a single bite.
Geja’s Cafe {340 West Armitage Avenue, Chicago; 773.281.9101}: This local gem has long been heralded as one of the most romantic restaurants and best date spots in the city. In fact, in 2015, Geja’s Café was even named “America’s Most Romantic Restaurant” by a USA Today reader poll. So if you haven’t planned a fondue date night here yet, it’s about time.
The Berghoff Restaurant {17 West Adams Street, Chicago; 312.427.3170}: The Berghoff has been around almost as long as the city of Chicago itself. Since 1898, they have been serving traditional German food and steins of beer in an old-world setting. Now, they are bringing something even more special to the table with their Adams Street Brewery, located right in the restaurant itself.
Prosecco {710 North Wells Street, Chicago; 312.951.9500}: We love when a Chicago favorite gets a facelift, and Prosecco’s latest décor update has given this amazing Italian restaurant fresh life. Their menu remains consistently awesome, featuring menu items like Frutti di Mare, Burrata with basil pesto, and more!
Cupitol {various locations}: Family-owned and female-run, Cupitol has locations both in River North and Evanston, giving more Chicagoans access to their all-day food vibes. Don’t sell them short by just thinking of them as a coffee shop…they’re so much more! With cocktails, lunch options like salads and hearty sandwiches, and even dinner dishes, like Skirt Steak & Frites, they are here to satiate hunger pangs all day long.
Athena {212 South Halsted Street #1, Chicago; 312.655.0000}: Greektown Chicago is a must-visit for foodies, and Athena should be your first stop. Their indoor/outdoor restaurant has sweeping city views, a welcoming family atmosphere and an expansive menu with Greek delicacies like Mousakas, Gyros, and Leg of Lamb.
