There are classic menu items that you can always count on. Safe and delicious…but still safe. And then there are dishes that surprise you. That you order because you don’t know quite what to expect…and then when they arrive you’re overwhelmed with taste. These are the over-the-top bites, the Instagram worthy meals, the drinks that make your night. For can’t miss treats, we have our favorites all lined up for you…

Public House’s Cake Shake {400 North State Street, Chicago; 312.265.1240}

It’s time to shake what your chef gave you, Chicago! Public House has a series of cake shakes that combine two of America’s favorite desserts: a milkshake and a honking piece of cake. They have seasonal offerings around holidays and fun events, but they have a few sweet options you can sip into all year long. The Chocolate Porter and Vanilla Stout (with confetti buttercream cake!) are always on the menu, and always delicious.

Jake Melnick’s Prohibition Burger {41 East Superior Street, Chicago; 312.266.0400}

There are all kinds of amazing, and unbelievable dishes at this corner tap, so we are going to name a few. Of course, there is the Prohibition Burger, topped with beer cheese spread, slow-smoked pulled pork, beer battered onion rings, and their signature stout BBQ sauce. But, if you want even MORE, there is also the Monster Burger, made with eight pounds of meat. It’s supposed to feed eight people, but we won’t judge if it takes less than that. If you like it hot, the XXX Wings features three different types of peppers: ghost, scorpion, and habanero. Hot, hot and HOT!

Sugar Factory’s Goblet {55 East Grand Avenue, Chicago; 312.946.2002}

Everything about Sugar Factory is over the top. That’s what they’re known for, and that’s part of the fun! Nothing, however, is more over the top than their array of goblets. From the Raspberry Watermelon Mojito to the Fuzzy Peach Penguin Mango to the Lollipop Passion and beyond, there is something sweet for every flavor palette. Plus, you can get them either with or without alcohol, so they’re perfect for every member of the family.

Goddess and Grocer’s Rainbow Cake {1649 North Damen Avenue, Chicago; 773.342.3200}

If follow all of the popular Chicago food Instagrams, you’ve seen one of Goddess’s cake. All of their desserts from Goddess and Grocer are well known, but the Rainbow Cake is legendary. Six layers of colorful goodness that you can order in with a cup of coffee or take to-go for a cozy night of decadence at home. Keep an eye out for seasonal offerings and cupcakes too!

Boleo’s Tropical Disco Cocktails {122 West Monroe Street, Chicago; 312.750.9007}

Want to give out of town guests an over the top look at Chicago food? Thanks to a retractable roof, The Kimpton Gray Hotel Chicago’s rooftop bar is open all year round! Every Wednesday night, starting at 8 PM  there is a Tropical Disco that will take your taste buds on a trip south of the border. Take it a few decades back with dance moves and stellar Absolut Elyx disco cocktails, all while enjoying gorgeous skyline views 15 floors up in the heart of the Loop.

BomboBar’s Hotter Chocolate {832 West Randolph Street, Chicago; 312.492.7775}

Perfect for this upcoming winter season, and for your Instagram feed, is the entire Bar Siena menu. But especially, the Hotter Chocolates! The dessert and coffee window off of Bar Siena in the West Loop is known for crazy cool concoctions, and this is no exception. You can, of course, get the standard hot chocolate with whipped cream and shaved dark chocolate. But for a true treat, try the S’Mores and Funfetti flavors. We’ll meet you there!
