Happy Cinco de Mayo to one and all! On this most important holiday, tequila sales double in restaurants and bars in the U.S.* and trends show tequila sales rising year-over-year. To learn more about this tasty spirit and the base of any margarita, we spoke with Jaime Salas, brand ambassador to Milagro tequila, the world’s most awarded tequila.

The meaning behind the taste

Milagro, which means miracle in Spanish, was co-founded by Mexico City natives Daniel Schneeweiss and Moises Guindi in 1997 when they felt their country’s national drink was no longer a fair representation of what Mexico was all about. They created a tequila that reflected the contemporary Mexico … crafted with traditional, Old World techniques.

The origin

Milagro is made with 100-percent blue agave from the highland terroir in Jalisco. Why is that important? Blue agave grows differently depending on the region of origin. Agave grown in the highlands are larger in size and sweeter in aroma and taste, while the lowlands produce agave with a more herbaceous fragrance and earthy flavor. Agave is grown for 10 years before harvesting.

Sip vs. shoot

Why sip versus shoot? Premium tequila is meant to sip. It’s robust like whiskey, fresh like vodka, and versatile.

Tequila is either 100-percent agave (such as Milagro) or “mixto” with 51-percent agave and 49-percent other sugars.

The drink of Cinco de Mayo

The Distilled Spirits Council reports that margaritas make up 47-percent of the cocktails ordered on this holiday. Plus, tequila sales are up 50-percent overall, with artisanal, high-end brands even more than that.

Milagro offers the “World’s Freshest Margarita,” with a recipe that includes only three ingredients: Milagro Silver, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar. Taste it! Salt optional.

The art of tequila-making

Milagro embraces the traditional, Old-World art of distilling tequila under the care of master distiller Pedro Juarez, and presents its distilled spirit in custom hand-painted bottles or hand-blown crystal bottles.

Plus, the brand is proud of its Mexico City roots. Not only are Milagro co-founders native to Mexico City, the “agave expressionism” embodies the spirit of their culture as well as the Milagro founders’ vision for a modern tequila reflective of the city where they grew up.
