River Roast
January is a time when we hear a lot about fresh starts and new goals. Eating clean, cleaning out (thanks Marie Kando!), and participating in “Dry January” are common-place moves for the start of a new year. Participating in Dry January doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on Chicago food fun, though. Especially with Restaurant Week coming up, you shouldn’t have to miss out on dinners with friends or date nights just because you won’t be drinking. These are great spots for mocktails and other non-alcoholic drinks. Take a sip and enjoy your month!

- River Roast {315 North LaSalle Drive, Chicago; 312.822.0100}: This can be your one-stop-shop for the month. River Roast’s Temperance Menu is a Dry January dream! We especially love the Kickstarter Punch (Georgia peach rooibos, turmeric, ginger, and lemon) and the Get Smashed (cranberry, lemon, ginger, apple cider, and rosemary).
- Clever Rabbit {2015 West Division Street, Chicago; 773.697.8711}: For the “Cottontails” who come into Clever Rabbit, they have non-alcoholic drinks like Apple Cider and Squash-Nog (house horchata and roasted butternut squash). It’s a perfect brunch or lunch spot for Dry January!
- Nico Osteria {1015 North Rush Street, Chicago; 312.994.7100}: Whether you’re in for lunch, brunch, or an afternoon apertivo, the bar staff will work with you to create an amazing non-alcoholic drink to accompany your favorite dish. We recommend the Pan Seared Gnocchi or Lobster Amatriciana pastas.
- Cindy’s Rooftop {12 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago; 312.792.3502}: One of the best bar views in the city should be open to one and all! Plus, they are currently refreshing the space so when they re-open again on January 24, you can have a whole new mocktail experience! Their Spiritlfree Menu includes drinks like the Embargo (verjus blanc, black lime, mint, and sparkling water).
- MAD Social {1140 West Madison Street, Chicago; 312.243.2097}: This West Loop hot spot is the perfect cozy place for a winter dinner with friends! Chat with their bar team for the latest in alcohol-free drinks and mocktails. Then get ready to dig in to their famous MAD Burger with gusto!
- Hub 51 {51 West Hubbard Street, Chicago; 312.828.0051}: Making plans for after-work happy hour but need something alcohol-free? This is the spot! They have mocktails like the Clean Green (cucumber, ginger, and LaCroix Curate), and the Refresh-Mint (raspberry and house-squeezed juices).
- Chicago q {1160 North Dearborn Street, Chicago; 312.642.1160}: Missing those summer barbecue vibes? Chicago q will give you a taste of warmer weather with their menu, and their team can whip up some fresh-tasting mocktails as well. They also have a gluten-free menu for those trying to eat healthier in 2019.
- Z Bar {The Peninsula Chicago, 108 East Superior Street, Chicago; 312.573.6888}: For a decadent mocktail, Z Bar is the perfect place! In addition to sparkling craft sodas, they also have mocktails like the Autumn Breeze (seedlip spice, grapefruit tonic, and lemon berry meritage). Sit back, sip, and enjoy!
- Beatrix {various locations}: Perfect for a January brunch or long weekend lunch, Beatrix has locations throughout the city offering fresh-squeezed juices all day including Cucumber & Mint Soda, Blueberry & Basil Smash, Blackberry Lychee Lemonade, and more.
- Jake Melnick’s {41 East Superior Street, Chicago; 312.266.0400}: If this is your favorite bar, you can still come for gamedays with your pals! Their $5, zero-proof drink menu includes everything from Mexican Coke, Jarritos Tamarindo, and Boylan Birch Beer to Northwoods Espresso Rootbeer, Lester’s Bacon Soda, and Senoral Sangria Soda. Cheers!
