Great sushi is all about quality. Even before the cooking process begins, things like thoughtful sourcing of ingredients and proper preparation can make or a break a sushi dish. Unfortunately, with sushi now available at every corner shop and supermarket, the original technique-driven art form has become lost among a crowd of cheaper options. Luckily, Chicago has an incredible selection of top-rated restaurants just waiting to show you what sushi really is. You won’t know what you’re missing until you try it!
1. Sushi Dokku {823 West Randolph Street, Chicago; 312.455.8238}: This Japanese sushi bar may be small, but its menu sure is mighty. Stop in for a mix of unorthodox and traditional rolls and small plates, plus inventive cocktails like the Lychee Martini with lemon, lychee juice, and vodka.
2. Katana {339 North Dearborn Street, Chicago; 312.877.5544}: The upscale LA-based restaurant made the big move to Chicago this past year, and we are very happy to have them. As well as classic Japanese sushi, Katana also offers robata-grilled skewers cooked over hot charcoals by way of the traditional Japanese method. Oh, and they have one of the best selection of Japanese sake and whisky in the city.
3. Kai {various locations}: For something more casual, try out Kai Sushi for old favorites like California rolls and spicy tuna. We recommend the super fresh seafood and sashimi. It’s perfect for a fun dinner with friends!
4. Kamehachi {various locations}: Opened in 1967, Chicago’s first sushi restaurant is still going strong. Delivering high quality maki, sashimi, and seafood, it’s no wonder Kamehachi has been around for over 50 years. And with five locations in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, you won’t have to travel far to see for yourself!
5. Enso {1613 North Damen Ave, Chicago; 773.878.8998}: With arched ceilings and a modern bar, the interior of this Wicker Park restaurant is just as pretty as the food. Don’t forget your phone because the Sashimi rosettes and sushi platters are extra Instagram-worthy.
6. Coast {2045 North Damen Ave, Chicago; 773.235.5775}: Whether you’re there for a cozy date night or celebratory dinner, the welcoming atmosphere and BYOB policy of Coast Sushi make for the perfect setting. The low prices don’t hurt either! Bring a few bottles of your favorite wine and just enjoy.
