Next week holds one of the most important food holidays of the year, so be sure to pay attention. The first Friday in June (June 3) is National Doughnut Day, and thus the happiest day maybe ever. You have a week to prepare and map out your must-eat stops for the holiday, and we are here to help. Here are the top places to eat doughnuts in Chicago for National Doughnut Day (or any day a craving strikes …).
Filini Bar & Restaurant
The newly appointed Executive Pastry Chef Caroline Kolaja is gracing us all with the presence of Angel Wings made of fried dough and served with hazelnut ice cream and a Nutella caramel sauce. It’s a doughnut from the heavens (maybe literally) but eaten at Filini {221 North Columbus Drive; 312.477.0234} with great views of our favorite city.
Formento’s
Italian hotspot Formento’s {925 West Randolph Street; 312.690.7295} is serving bite-sized bomboloni, Italian-style doughnuts made with various fillings even beyond the actual holiday itself. Available for Sunday brunch filled with raspberry jam or Nutella or for dessert with vanilla rum cream and anise sugar.
Firecakes Donuts
This is the mecca of National Doughnut Day, and indeed all doughnut days for the city of Chicago. Firecakes {68 West Hubbard; 312.329.6500} features classic flavors like Old Fashioned Buttermilk and Classic Jelly, but also dives into the creative with Valrhona Chocolate and Espresso Cream as well as Maple Glazed Pineapple and Bacon. Pick up an Ice Cream Doughnut Sandwich if you’re really feeling adventurous, but don’t worry about getting there early in the morning. The River North location is open until midnight all weekend long.
Siena Tavern
Another location for the Italian bomboloni, but this one is a DIY dessert! Siena Tavern’s {51 West Kinzie Street; 312.595.1322} take on the delicious doughnut allows you to inject them with a variety of flavors including chocolate hazelnut and whiskey caramel based on just how decadent you like your donuts. Pair it with their gelato flight for the best kind of sugar overload.
Pub Royale
An unexpected location to be sure, but this Wicker Park take on a modern British pub {2049 West Division; 773.661.6874} also happens to serve a tantalizingly twisted doughnut made with deep fried naan dough and finished with a dreamy dulce de leche glaze spiked with chai spice. Consistently listed as some of the best doughnuts in town, you’ll also probably need the bit of sweetness after a flavor packed meal of India Hot Chicken or Lamb Dumplings with chile oil.
