There really isn’t a bad season to throw back a few drinks, but during these cold winter months, it’s almost necessary. Gather around the table with friends, family or coworkers for a few cocktails, and before you know it, it’ll be springtime! Luckily, no restaurant is looking out for a freezing Windy City on the cocktail front quite like Tortoise Supper Club {350 North State Street, Chicago; 312.755.1700}. In addition to their regular cocktail menus, they are also running half-priced specialty cocktails during happy hour from 4-7:30 pm in the lounge area. Owner Keene Addington discusses the signature cocktail program and shares a recipe with us…

Winter is in full swing! How can people hide from the cold at Tortoise Supper Club?

Timeless, warm and friendly, like your neighborhood bartender, Tortoise Supper Club is a place that’s comfortable and authentic. The space offers warm and charming undertones that will keep you feeling nice and cozy throughout the city’s cold months. Enjoy the local artwork and artifacts in this family-owned restaurant, that tell stories of new and old Chicago. Additionally, we welcome guests to sit fireside within the Red Room—the perfect setting to host a private dinner.

You also have some new cocktails for the season.

We pride ourselves on offering classic, yet stiff drinks. A few of our newest editions include the Guava Margarita featuring Jimador Tequila, Vida Mezcal, guava, lime with a sweet chili rim, the Hot Toddy with Spiced Pear Liqueur, whiskey, honey syrup, lemon juice, and bitters and the Jazz Club with Tito’s Vodka, Luxardo Bitters, jasmine syrup, and lemon juice.

Which one is your favorite?

One of my favorite cocktails it the Guava Margarita—it’s spicy and fresh!

You also have special deals on during happy hour. What do you hope guests experience during that time?

We offer $1 shrimp and $1 oysters for happy hour, Monday through Friday from 4:30-6:30pm. On Wednesdays, we offer half-price signature cocktails as well. Our customers are able to sit back and unwind after a long day at work while sipping on a classic cocktail and enjoying shrimp and oysters. There’s nothing better!

What else can we look forward to at Tortoise Supper Club?

Chef Aaron Browning continues to re-invent and excite our guests with new seasonal menu offerings, while still embracing the classic presentations of steaks, chops, and fresh seafood that we are best known for. A few of our weekly specials that are worth noting include the Buttermilk Battered Cod and Sautéed Frog Legs, both offered on Friday, and the delicious Prime Rib with a Northwood’s dry rub on Saturdays.

Once you fall in love with the Tortoise Supper Club cocktails in the restaurant, you’ll want to make them at home too. That’s why we got the recipe for their Guava Margarita…

In a shaker filled with ice, combine 1 ounce of El Jimador or other preferred tequila, 3/4 ounce mezcal, 3/4 ounce lime juice, and 1/2 ounce of guava syrup. Shake and pour over ice. Garnish with a sweet chili lime rim.
