These bars and restaurants are serving some of the best whiskey in the city

Whiskey lovers are a special breed, noting all the intricacies of every sip of the beverage with love and attention to detail. That makes finding a new distillery, whiskey cocktail, or bar list especially exciting. For National Whiskey Day this weekend, head to these spots to find a new taste of your favorite amber liquor. Some of them might be unexpected, but, after all, that’s what makes for a great whiskey…
STK Chicago {9 West Kinzie Street, Chicago; 312.340.5636}: Enjoy your whiskey on a budget during STK’s Social Hour! Monday through Friday, from 3:30-6:30pm, you can get half-off specialty cocktails like their “Not So Old Fashioned” made with Woodford Reserve bourbon whiskey. They also have deals on wine and other shareable apps.

Vajra {1329 West Chicago Avenue, Chicago; 312.929.4990}: Authentic Nepalese and Indian cuisine might not be the first thing you’d think to pair with whiskey, but it should be. The bright, and often spicy, flavors of the food pair so well with cocktails like The Spiny Babbler Nest (with Suntory Toki Blended whisky, West 32 Reserve Soju, and Szechuan-demerara syrup). You can also try their unique whiskey list on the rocks to fully appreciate the flavors.
Jake Melnick’s {41 East Superior Street, Chicago; 312.266.0400}: In celebration of the holiday, the bar will unveil a newly expanded list of top-shelf whiskey varietals. In fact, they’ll be adding nearly 60 new and dynamic bottles to their list! Plus, they’ve partnered with FEW Distillery to release a special single-barrel whiskey EXCLUSIVE to Jake Melnick’s, that is only available for a limited time. Enjoy now and enjoy later!
Juniper Spirits & Oysters {Claridge House Chicago, 1244 North Dearborn Parkway, Chicago; 312.416.5811}: If you love a classic, they have you covered. From the Manhattan to the Whiskey Sour to the Old Fashioned, Juniper serves them with excellence. The perfect spot for those in the neighborhood or those in from out of town.

Sable Kitchen & Bar {Kimpton Hotel Palomar Chicago, 4803, 505 North State Street, Suite 101, Chicago; 312.755.9704}: With an impressively unique cocktail list, and a truly diverse whiskey list (they have 400 options overall!), this is the perfect after-work spot to linger over a glass of your new favorite whiskey.
BLVD {817 West Lake Street, Chicago; 312.526.3116}: For an elevated date night, BLVD is your spot. Their twists and upgrades to dishes from the “1950s that offered mainstream ‘American’ food (think steak & potatoes),” mean that many menu items pair well with whiskey. They have several whiskey cocktail options, but something tells us you’re going to want to go on the rocks for this dinner.
