Run, don’t walk, for these carbo-loading celebration destinations
This weekend, Chicago will literally be overrun by the 2019 Chicago Marathon. Runners—and approximately 1.7 million spectators—will take over 29 Chicago neighborhoods on Sunday before crossing the finish line. Since 26 miles is no joke, it’s important that everyone is properly fed before the Sunday start time and that they have a place to celebrate afterwards. Luckily, bars and restaurants along the route and across the city are stepping up to provide delicious carbs and celebratory specials that anyone (regardless of your fitness level) will love.
Parlay at Joy District {112 West Hubbard Street, Chicago; 312.955.0339}: Runners who visit Parlay at Joy District after the marathon will enjoy a 26.2 percent discount for their entire party on any food. Just show your runner ID number to receive the discount on new menu items including Lamb Sliders, Seared Steak Sandwich, Spicy Italian Pizza, and more. No celebration is complete without pizza, after all.
Bernie’s Chicago {660 North Orleans Street, Chicago; 312.624.9892}: If you’re running with a team, or want to celebrate with family and friends, having a group cocktail is the perfect way to say “Cheers” to having those 26.2 miles in your rearview. Bernie’s Chicago now has Large Format Cocktails that are made for sharing! Our favorite is the Mood Indigo cocktail made with Suntory Toki Whiskey, Crème de Mure, red wine, lime, orange, black pepper and sage. It serves 3-4 people and is a great blend of fall and success!
Offshore Rooftop and Bar {Navy Pier, 1000 East Grand Avenue, Chicago; 312.535.6660}: You just ran a marathon! Celebrating should be simple and shouldn’t break the bank. Luckily, Offshore at Navy Pier is offering the Offshore Burger, a Miller High Life, and a shot of Jameson for only $15 to any runner who wears their medal after 3pm on marathon Sunday.
Café Robey {1616 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago; 872.315.3084}: Start your marathon prep early in Bucktown. Café Robey has a three-course menu designed specifically for pre-marathon carbo-loading. For $26.20 (see what they did there?) you can dig into Pumpernickel and Beet Panzanella Salad, followed by Egg Pasta with roasted sweet potatoes, mushrooms and herb butter and finish with a Puff Pastry with apple cider sorbet and pecan crumbs. This menu is available on Friday, Oct. 11, Saturday, Oct. 12, and again for National Pasta Day on Thursday, Oct. 17.
Club Lucky {1824 West Wabansia Avenue, Chicago; 773.227.2300}: Pasta, please! This neighborhood Bucktown spot has been delivering delicious dishes for decades, and if you need a spot to escape from the crowds, let us show you the way. This is also a wonderful spot for feasting on Friday or Saturday pre-run! You’ll leave with a full stomach and relaxed spirit.
Prime & Provisions {222 North LaSalle Street, Chicago; 312.726.7777}: This steakhouse knows how to reward marathon runners. They are treating all marathon participants to a complimentary Grand Brunch (a $79 value!), including bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys, until 3pm. All you have to do is show your marathon medal and you’ll be given the all-star treatment. It’s a deal worth running for!
Macello {1235 West Lake Street, Chicago; 312.850.9870}: This fun Italian destination will have not one, not two, but three pasta specials for marathon weekend. Come in ready to indulge.
Stix n’ Brix Wood Fired Pizza {220 West 33rd Street, Chicago; 312.265.0219}: Whether you’re carbo-loading before or rewarding yourself after, pizza is a great meal for marathoners. Stix n’ Brix has amazing wood-fired pizzas that will feed the whole family, and for any South Siders coming in to cheer on runners, they’re also connected to Red Line Cafe, which serves coffee, smoothies and more.
